Cawthorne Church Of England (VC) Primary School

RE (Religious Education) At Cawthorne

Religious Education Policy

R.E. in this school develops pupils’ knowledge, understanding and awareness of Christianity, and other religions represented in our country. We want our children to learn about religion, and from it, respecting others’ beliefs and practice. We see R.E. teaching as an important aspect of school life where children put into practice the spiritual and moral values they have been introduced to. R.E. teaching follows the Barnsley locally agreed syllabus in conjunction with Understanding Christianity.

The teaching of Christianity is taught through the 'Understanding Christianity' scheme. This is a spiral curriculum which allows the children to come back to units more than once as they progress through school to further develop their substantive knowledge and disciplinary skills. Children learn about 'The Big Picture' of the Bible as they work through the units.

The teaching of other World Religions is divided into 6 Key Questions:

1. Why are these words special?
2. Why are some places special?
3. How can faith contribute to community cohesion?
4. Why are some times special?
5. What can be learned from the lives of significant people of faith?
6. How do I and others feel about life and the universe around us?

Units of work are planned around these key questions, encouraging children to develop their thinking skills.

Developing Spirituality At Cawthorne

What is Spirituality at Cawthorne?

Spirituality is not easy to define, as it is a deeply personal experience which changes over time. Spirituality is not the same as having a faith and it can be felt by anyone, regardless of religion. At Cawthorne Primary School, we have defined spirituality as: Spirituality is something that we feel inside ourselves and that grows within us. It is a journey of personal growth and is a way of connecting with life, giving it purpose and meaning. It involves having awe and wonder, asking questions and seeking answers. It is about taking our Cawthorne School Values and demonstrating them in the right way towards each other, nature and the world around us.’

Spirituality is the unifying force that bonds everyone and everything together at Cawthorne.

2 Corinthians 4: 6’For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.’

We have a clear understanding of what we want our children, our staff and all members of our Cawthorne community to achieve. We have a clear, shared understanding of what spirituality is and how we can best develop this in everyone associated with our school. Our comprehensive provision for spiritual development provides the right environment, conditions and approaches so that everyone at Cawthorne flourishes on their journeys through school and in their lives beyond our school gates.
